In 2020 a friend gave me a used copy of the children’s book’ Little Black Sambo by Helen Bannerman in 1899. The world has changed a lot since then. The story has never changed but the original illustrations (as Langston Hughes put it, in the pickaninny style) have gone through some revisions. And here I’m doing my take on a new cover...in golliwog style 2020. Gary Collage and painting, various sizes.
Cardboard, paper, gold powder and oil paint. These delivery boxes arrive at the house more often these days. I flatten them out and use them in the studio when I’m short of paper. 2020. Gary  Oil pastel on paper (75 x 56cm).
